Monthly Family History Classes at Stake Center

Saturday, January 28th was the first monthly Family History class. Sharon Palmer from the Kenwood 2nd ward led a great discussion and training about how to organize your genealogical information. Some of the key ideas were:

    1. Color Code your files. Use one color for each of your grandparents (red, blue, green, yellow). All ancestors of that grandparent use the same color files. Each file should be labeled with the name of the person and their birth year. Put copies of vital records in acid free sheet protectors within the file. To assist with the color coding system, print a color fan chart of your ancestors using the application at www.treeseek.com. 

    2. For family photos, label all of them with who is in the photo. Use acid free pen and label on the back. Store photos in 9x12 envelope that is 3-hole punched and stored in a binder with the name of the person on the outside edge of each envelope. Punch the envelope so the bottom of the envelopes is a little above the bottom of the binder. Don't postpone getting the names of the people in the photos. Those who might recognize them won't be around forever. You also might consider keeping a CD or flash drive with the scanned photos in your fire-safe.

    3. Store your files in plastic boxes. They will help deter both water damage and critters. Although not fool-proof, it is a better system than using cardboard boxes. 

    4. Be sure you don't have metal, acidic paper, or newspaper touching anything of value in your stored documents. They will eventually damage the surrounding materials unless they are isolated by plastic.

    5. Get a flash-drive to transfer data from the church's computers to your own and back again if you are using either the stake or downtown libraries. Also pass the info to several relatives so that in case of disaster, the info isn't lost. Sharing is a great way to prevent permanent loss. One person also recommended on-line backup.

    6. Develop a system that works for your type of research. Make it easy to maintain, simple, flexible, inexpensive and self-explanatory.

1925 ~ 2012
Shirley LeFevre Withers beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away January 22, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was born April 27, 1925 in Panguitch, Utah to Daniel James LeFevre and Mariam Ruth Robinson LeFevre. She married the love of her life, Wesley Lee Withers May 29, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple December 29, 1948. Together they raised six children: Fred (Lupe) Withers, Elaine Stratton, Sharon (Bob) Montgomery, Wendy (Bill) Underwood, Mark (Michelle) Withers and Mary Anne (Doug) Balfour. She is survived by her husband, children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, daughter, Baby Shirley Withers, brother and sisters: Jay LeFevre, Marie Stewart Johnston, Orvilla LeFevre Shakespeare and LaRine LeFevre Bradshaw. 
She served as a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many capacities in the Primary, Cub Scouting, and Relief Society.
Shirley's favorite thing was spending time with her family, sewing, quilting, camping, fishing, any activity that created lasting memories. She left a legacy of the importance of family.
We will celebrate the life of Shirley on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. and viewing starting at 9:45 a.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary located at 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah 84092. Interment immediately following services at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

Found Bag & Shoes

A black Nike bag with a pair of size 5.5 running cleats were found on a lawn on Melbourne.  Does this sound like something that belongs at your house?  If so please contact Valarie L.  If not please ask around as it sounds like something expensive to replace!

Also there is a green pottery barn bowl that was left at the Ward Christmas party.  It is a beautiful bowl and if no one claims it then we are going to start arguing over who gets to keep it!  Contact Chris P. if you know who it belongs to!

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away of natural causes with family surrounding her. She had a great love for life, family, and her Father in Heaven. We were blessed to have her as our mother.
Helen was born to Olive Iverson & Gustave Adolph Hokanson, step-mother, Elfa, siblings Elaine Bjornn (dec), Dorothy Harvey and step brothers, Von and Milton. She met and married her eternal companion and sweetheart, Einar Willard Swensen (dec), Salt Lake Temple, August 30, 1948. Survived by children, Carol, Marlene, (Roy Zander), Paul, and Barry; 6 grandchildren, (Dean, Nicole, Kristen, Paul, Alice, and David); 2 great- grandchildren (Aleksia and Colett).
Viewing: Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, 6 - 7 pm, Jan 19, 2012. Funeral services: Grandview Ward, 2930 South 2000 East, SLC, viewing 12 - 1 pm. Service 1 - 2 pm, Jan 20, 2012. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Found Rabbit

Do you know where your rabbit is?  A very big bunny rabbit, about 15 lbs., was found this evening about a half a block west of Melbourne on 2700 South.  The rabbit is grey and was very friendly.  If you know where this bunny's home is please contact me, Lisa C., to find out where to pick him/her up.  Thanks!
