The Laborers of the Vineyard

 Sister Tripp gave a wonderful lesson from Elder Holland's Conference talk, "Laborers in the Vineyard." In that parable (Matt. 20: 1-15), the Laborers who were hired at "the eleventh hour" (end of the day) were equally rewarded with those laborers who had been hired and working since the morning, and the first hired laborers felt it was unfair. Carol lead a discussion on this envy that all of us feel at times when others are blessed, and how we can change that attitude.  Elder Holland said, "We are not in a race against each other ... The race we are really in is the race against sin." The parable is about the Atonement and grace of Christ, which He extends to every one of us.  "His concern is for the faith at which you finally arrive, not the hour of the day in which you got there."

Apparently the High Priests had an extremely enjoyable treat in their meeting two weeks ago.  The Gundry's were kind enough to share the "secret" recipe which is actually a recipe shared with the ward a few years ago by Fred Ball:

Great-Grandma Ball's Fabulous Cookies

1/2 c. Crisco                    1/2 tsp salt

1 stick butter                     2 tsp. vanilla

1c. sugar                             2 c. flour

1c. brown sugar                 3 c. oatmeal

2 eggs                                 1 c. chopped walnuts ( I put more)  

1 tsp. baking soda            1 c. raisins ( I put more)

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream together Crisco, butter, and sugars.  Add eggs, baking soda, baking powder, salt & vanilla.  Mix.  Add flour, oatmeal, walnuts, & raisins.  Mix all together.  Bake at 400 degrees for 7 - 8 minutes.

Sharing the Gospel

Our combined Relief Society and Priesthood meeting today featured our Sister Missionaries, Sisters Martin and Snow as well as our Ward Mission Leader Brother Barrera.  Brother Barrera used a few interviews with Brother Michael Otterson, Managing Director of the Public Affairs Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the basis for some of his lesson.  Here are a few clips from that interview that may be of interest and help you as you share the gospel:

Marjorie Ackroyd Gilson

April 25, 1929 ~ July 16, 2012
I was going to be an author, until I read a picture is worth a thousand words so I became an artist instead. If you knew me you would know that I would write my own obit. I've not room to tell it all, so the worst things I'll omit.
My parents had eight children; I was the youngest of them all. My father was James Walter Ackroyd, my mother Sina Christina Olsen. My siblings now deceased are: Marie, Walter, Max, Edith, Grant, and Ammon. My dear sister Clara is still alive.
I am survived by my husband Dumayne "Gil" Gilson. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple almost 62 years ago, on November 7, 1950. It has been a special union. I taught him to play tennis, golf, and cards, and he quickly learned to beat me at my own games. We have five children: Terry Lynne Decker (Tom), Renee Gilson, Leslie Peterson (Randy), James D. Gilson (Pat), and Darin Dumayne Gilson (Susie). 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
I was a gourmet cook, and we had family dinners every Sunday. We ate well, played games, and laughed a lot. We boated on Lake Powell the week it started to fill up. We spent most of our vacations there, and made great family memories.
I have many very special friends. I've been a lifetime faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I've had a wonderful life, but my work here is done; I look forward to sweet reunions with those on the other side. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 20, 11:00 a.m. at the Holladay-Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 S Highland Drive. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service at the same location. Online condolences may be submitted towww.memorialutah.com

Patriotic Celebration

We had an enjoyable Patriotic Celebration this evening.

The event was well attended.

Brother Mahoney conducted.

The scouts presented the colors.

Brother Foster, a dear friend of Brother Mahoney, accompanied by his son, sang America The Beautiful.

Brother Thorup gave the opening prayer.  Brother Thorup was one of Brother Monte Mahoney's Eagle Scouts.

Our speaker was Brother Mahoney's older brother, 1st LT Charles Mont Mahoney, who served in Patton's 3rd Army at the Battle of the Bulge, the freeing of France and the occupation of Germany.

 Brother Mont Mahoney had a number of interesting stories regarding the war and how he was protected because of the blessings he had from obeying the commandments.  He told us that he was promised protection IF he kept his temple covenants, IF he listened to his Patriarchal blessing and IF he obeyed the commandments and time and time again these promises were kept and he survived the war.
It was a privilege for all who attended to hear Mont Mahoney's accounts of the war first hand and to hear his testimony come through.

Brother Mont Mahoney is in a KUED DVD about World War II veterans.  Brother McBride set up a TV so that attendees could view the video if they liked during the ice cream & cookie social held after the program.

Brother Verhaaren gave the closing prayer.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious homemade (and store bought) ice cream and cookies as well as the opportunity to visit with neighbors and ward members.

Thank you so much to Allyn & Connie Mahoney and their committee, Nancy & Darro Taufer, Carol & Morray Yates, and Mike McBride for making tonight a wonderful evening.  A big thank you to Luke Ralphs and the scouts for their diligence in presenting the colors.  Thank you to everyone who brought ice cream, cookies and toppings.  Everyone was able to enjoy more than their fill of deliciousness. And finally a big thank you to everyone who helped set up and clean up the activity.  There were so many helping hands that made everything run smoothly.

1939 ~ 2012
Peter Wolfgang Koerbler lost his courageous battle of seven years to difficult health conditions on May 7, 2012. He was born to Anton Franz and Stephanie Marie Negrini Koerbler on November 7, 1939, in Vienna, Austria. He lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for nearly 60 years. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Boulware, on September 1, 1967. Peter fought valiantly to live, never complaining of all he endured. He had a quick wit and loved to tell stories, joke, tease, and make everyone laugh. He was beloved by all who had the honor of knowing him. Peter will be missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Carolyn; children, Michael (Emily), and Jennifer Flynn; grandchildren, Kieran, Joshua, and Zander; and sister, Ruth (Charles) Greenmun. Preceded in death by parents and son, Jason. An open house to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at 8054 Big Spring Drive, West Jordan. www.goffmortuary.com

Richard E. Hadfield

Richard E. "Dick" Hadfield, beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend died peacefully at home on May 8, 2012. He was born on Nov. 17, 1937, the only child of William E. "Ted" Hadfield and Lola Ernstsen Hadfield. Dick was a lifelong resident of Salt Lake City and was employed by Hercules/ATK for 39 years. On July 16, 1966 he married Barbara Turnier.
Dick was a Master Gardener and after retiring pursued his love of gardening by raising thousands of plants, sharing them with family and friends.
Dick is survived by his wife Barbara, son Brian (Danyell), daughter Keri and grandchildren Sheridan and Liam.
At his request there will be no funeral. There will be an informal memorial gathering to celebrate Dick's life on Tuesday, May 15 fron 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sugarhouse Garden Center, 1602 E. 2100 So. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Sugarhouse Park in Richard's name.

Carol Bernice Warner, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed away May 3rd at age 76.
Carol's life was full of love and devotion to her husband and family and always put her family before her own needs. She married the love of her life, ElVon in 1958. She was a loving mother of her two children, Shauna Shedden, and Sherm (Margarita) Warner; grandmother of three granddaughters, Tiana, Cecilia (Daryl), and Tanisha; and one grandson, Jamie. She graciously followed her husband around the world by accompanying him on two overseas assignments to Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. She also obtained her B.S. degree from BYU in business education and worked in many different positions including being a word processing supervisor at Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company and teaching typing and word processing at University of Northern Iowa. She finished her career working at ElVon's side with S.E. Warner Software. She was truly loved by everyone who knew her.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the LDS Parkway 9th ward chapel located at 10200 S. 3200 W., South Jordan, Utah 84095 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am and will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow the service at the Provo cemetery. Services under the care of Holbrook Mortuary. Condolences may be extended to the family at: sewarner@sewarner.com

Sunday's Lesson

   Ann Hatch gave the lesson Sunday on VISITING TEACHING.  She taught us that visiting teaching is not just a quick visit and lesson---  but it is ministering to, watching over, and strengthening our sisters  She showed a short video clip of Sister Julie B. Beck.  When Sister Beck was asked what is the one thing she would tell us about visiting teaching she answered "Get over yourselves! Just take care of it---just take care of each other!  We can do this!"   Ann bore a strong personal testimony of being a visiting teacher.  She inspired us all to be better visiting teachers.

Spring Swing in Photos

 The University of Utah Ballroom Dancers helped everyone learn a thing or two about swing dancing.

There were lots of delicious cupcakes and candies to snack on.
