Container gardening: Herbs

Or: How to have your fun and eat it, too!

“Gardening” in pots and containers allows you to grow herbs in any small but sunny place. Even if you do not have a patio, balcony or other outdoor space, containers can be set in a sunny window. South- and east-facing windows are best. Herbs can be grown in windows that receive less light, as they thrive with fewer hours of direct sun.

Choosing containers:

1. Choose pots that are big enough to accommodate your desired plants. Too small pots can restrict the root system and dry out very quickly. Pots that are too big may not be able to drain properly. Choose pots that fit well into your growing area.

2. Terracotta pots absorb a lot of moisture, so take that into account when watering. The inexpensive plastic pots work well, and may be placed in another more decorative pot for dressing up your windows or patio corners. Wooden containers are susceptible to rot, so use a plastic lining.

3. Make sure your pot has adequate drainage. Holes should be ¼ to ½ inch across..

Growing Mixture

Make sure your planting soil drains rapidly but retains enough moisture to keep the roots evenly moist. Purchase a good quality potting mixture, and make sure it says that it can be used for growing vegetables.

Sunlight

Your container garden will need at least five hours of direct sunlight each day. If you place your containers in a window, particularly a west-facing window, take into consideration the extra heat that comes through. Place herbs with similar light requirements in the same area. Herbs which tolerate full sun are basil, rosemary, and thyme. Lemon balm, tansy, oregano and parsley like partial shade. Bay, chamomile, coriander, ginger, mint and tarragon tolerate full shade.

Watering

In an exposed outdoor location, container plants loose moisture quickly. Some plants will need to be watered daily, especially during hot, dry weather. Inside plants should be monitored as well. Water should go through to the drain holes each time. But don’t overwater!

What to grow

The most common herbs to grow in pots are the culinary herbs. Herbs picked and used immediately always have a much stronger, fresher flavor than any you can buy at the supermarket!

If you enjoy several different types of cooking styles try growing groups of herbs for each style.

Consider the following:

Mexican: Chili peppers, cilantro and basil

French: Thyme, lavender and French tarragon.

European: Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (The “Scarborough Faire” mix!)

Asian: Basils, anise, lemon grass, garlic chives, chile peppers

Middle Eastern: Mint, coriander (which is the seed from cilantro plants), chiles

Other combinations can be tried as well, such as herbs to add to your salads and barbecue sauces. Having pots of chives and cilantro close to, or on, the patio table, will encourage your family and guests to snip fresh herbs to add to their salads or baked potatoes.

5 Tips for Organizing Your Closet

Jenna has done the research for us and presented these five fabulous tips for Organizing our Closets.  Jenna acknowledged that not all of these ideas will fit everyones situation but they are a great place to start!

1. Start from scratch. That means you need to get everything that's in your closet out! It's only temporary but you will need to pick a day when you can carry every single item out of your closet.

TIP: While the closet is bare, you may as well give it a quick vacuuming and do whatever you can to tidy up the space a bit.

2. Now that you have a clean palette, you need to sort each and every item and place each article of clothing into one of the following piles:
• Keep for Daily Wear
• Keep for Special Occasions
• Donate or Give Away
• Trash It

3. To help you decide which pile certain garments belong in, you may need to take the time to try things on and make sure they still fit. If something doesn't fit exactly as it should right now, but you are 100% certain that it will fit fine very soon, then you should put that item in the "Special Occasions" pile.

TIP: Do yourself a favor . . . You need to be brutally honest during this process. Be very selective about the things you cannot currently fit in but still wish to keep. Besides, the more room you clear out, the more room you will have to buy clothes that do fit!

4. Once each and every item has been assigned to a category, then you need to determine exactly where you will be storing those items earmarked "Special Occasions". One thing is for sure: such items do NOT belong in your closet that is filled with daily apparel.

TIP: Consider devoting a closet in a spare bedroom for this purpose or designate some space in the attic or the basement.

5. Finally, one by one, carry each item to it's respective spot:
• Your closet for your daily apparel
• Your "Special Occasion" area (a spare closet, basement, attic or garment boxes)
• Bags or Boxes for donation to others

TIP: Stick to your guns. . . Don't talk yourself into switching piles at the last minute. Like most things, your first instinct is always the best choice! And don't allow any non-clothing items back into the closet. NO Suitcases, vacuum cleaners, coats, boxes, bags or linens! These items all belong elsewhere.

Yes, Organizing things CAN by FUN!

Cleaning out the closet is such a cleansing, uplifting thing to do. It is just one of the many ways that we can all rid ourselves of "junk" and things we no longer want, need or even like anymore.  And as you clean out the closet don't forget to save the items in the "Donate" pile for the Swap being held at the Ward house on Saturday June 19th.

Relief Society May Evening Meeting

At tonight's Relief Society meeting there were three great lessons presented:
1) Growing herbs in containers by Rachael S.

2) Organizing our Closets
(This closet photo was found on the Internet so don't think someone has come into your house and taken a picture of your children's closet.  Ha ha ha)
And
3) Getting the most out of your visits to the Temple

Look for individual posts on each topic this week!
Thank you to everyone for bringing all the wonderful finger foods.  We will need to gather the recipes for these items and post them as well.  There were many delightful dishes shared tonight.

May - LOVINGKINDNESS

Theme: We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple. (Psalms 48:9)

Application: Demonstrate lovingkindness

Lovingkindness is an attribute of the Savior. It embodies all of the themes we have worked with this year. If we demonstrated lovingkindness in all aspects of our lives, we would become more Christ like, more sensitive to his spirit, more worthy of his blessings.

The Lord showers us with lovingkindness. He answers our prayers, he forgives us, he protects us, he believes in us and he never gives up on us unless we cast him out. Oh that we could do the same for those around us.

As we prepare to go together to the temple on June 9, we need to be aware of our relationships. We need to do all we can to be more like Him. We need to demonstrate lovingkindness.

I leave you with my testimony that the Windows of Heaven have opened and many members of this ward have felt his lovingkindness and there are some who are new to the temple who will be with us on the glorious day in June when we worship together. May we be blessed in our efforts, I pray

April - THANK YOU!

In April we discussed Mosiah 2:20-21 “…if ye should render all the thanks . . . which your whole soul has power to possess . . . yet ye would be unprofitable servants.” The application of this theme, was that we were asked to sincerely say “Thank You” to the people in our lives. So far the past month I have focused on being really sincere in my thanks to people.

A great example to me of someone who is sincere is Jeff. He always tells me thank you for taking care of the kids, cleaning the house, and for making dinner. . . even when all I did was heat up a can our soup. But he says it in a way that makes me think that that can of soup is the best can of soup he’s ever eaten in his entire life!

I have noticed that as I try to say thank you more, I actually notice more things to be thankful for. And I think that it has rubbed off onto my kids, too. A few times, I didn’t need to remind my kids to say think you to someone for something, and they’ve even thank me for helping them with their homework, or getting them a treat at Maverik. I have also notice that being aware and looking for things to be thankful for has blessed my life with more gratitude in my heart for the simple things that bless my heart.

March - I LOVE YOU!

Theme: He that dwelleth in Love, dwelleth in God…. (1John 4:126)

Application: "I Love You"

There are times when the responsibility that comes with leadership, whether in the church, in the home or in the workplace, weighs heavily on you. I often feel it. One Sunday I came to church with such feelings. I was worried. Was I doing enough and was I doing it right. With these feelings weighing on me, I sat down in Sunday School class and glanced across the room. I caught the eye of a young woman who mouthed the words, “I love you”. It melted my heart. That little expression mouthed across the room sent my spirits soaring. I felt the love of the Lord through her. There is a wonderful song from the musical “Camelot” that says, the way to handle a woman is to love her, simply love her. A true principle. We all want to be loved. We all need to be loved. And we all need to express that love. We need to say I love you.

February - Purify Your Heart

Theme: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

 Application: Purify your heart

February was the perfect month for this theme, and our heart tree exercise. Instead of being distracted by the “things” the world tries to tell us will make us feel loved, we were able to focus on serving others – showing love in the Lord’s way. The heart tree drew my family closer together. There were quiet acts of service written on pink, purple, red, and white hearts. Instead of unloading only half of the dishwasher (as is the daily task assigned to the younger children); the entire dishwasher was emptied. Someone set and cleared the table. Nobody complained. Helping hands were offered. The laundry was done. Bathrooms were cleaned without asking or negotiation – and we don’t know exactly who did the work. As a family we discussed how acts of service made us feel. After a while the paper hearts were forgotten, but the little acts of service continued – as if it were a fun new game. I hope the acts of service in your family, or between friends and neighbors have brought your hearts closer to the Lord and each other because serving each other will accomplish precisely that.

January - Clean UP!

Theme: Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, even…a house of order. (D&C 109:8)

Application: Clean Up

Just before I took on this assignment, I cleaned my house. I tackled every drawer, every cupboard, every closet. I cleaned under every bed, in the garage, the frige and the freezer, filing cabinets, storage rooms, you name it. I cleaned it! But after a while I started to get discouraged and frankly very bored. I began to complain about this mundane task and could see no end to it.

One day, as I sat in the temple it came to me. The Lord created the world one task, one day at a time. At the end of each day he looked upon his labors and said, “it is good.” He didn’t grumble and say, “will this ever end?” “This is so boring”. I came home renewed. I realized that this is what I was doing. I was organizing and cleaning up my own little world. Since then, I have tried to find pleasure in whatever clean up task I am engaged in. And when I am finished I try to look at it and say “it is good.”

December - SING!

D & C 25:12

For my soul delighteth in the SONG OF THE HEART and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.

APPLICATION: SING

It has been great to have music in our Relief Society each month. We have heard from the Priesthood with the Y.M. and the Primary children. More recently the Young Women sang about the HOLY TEMPLE .

I love the music the Primary teaches. The songs have a lot of meaning that will help build their budding testimonies.

I remember the first time I heard the song "A Child's Prayer". It touched me so much. It was sung by a young mother and her daughter. At first the child sang and said, "Heavenly Father, are you really there? and do you hear and answer every child's prayer?

The mother then sang, "Pray, He is there, Speak, he is listening, you are his child."

December was a great month to be aware of music and wanting to sing. So we will sing where ever we are, in the shower, kitchen or with our family in the car.

President Packer says, Thru music man's ability to express himself extends beyond the limits of spoken language. Allow the power of music to fill your hearts.

November - Hands

In November, we discussed the scripture Alma 26:3 “… we have been made instruments in the hands of god to bring about this great work,” and we saw a wonderful video of some of the many helping hands in our ward. This application of this theme was that we were challenged to find new ways to use our hands to bless the lives of others.

Since then, as I have tried to find ways to serve others, it has made me notice more how other people’s hands have blessed my life.

A few months ago, as I was sitting in the temple, I could see just right down the row of people, and I recognized Jeff’s hands. It made me stop to think about whether I thought I would recognize my Savior’s hands. Then the thought occurred to me that I see his hands ever day through people around me who serve me. Like the sweet sister who picked up the phone to call and see how I was doing…just when I needed it. Or getting a nice thank you not in the mail. Someone holding the door open for me as I go into a store. A priesthood blessing.

I am so thankful for all of the great people around me who are so willing to use their hands just like the Savior would. It has made me really focus on helping others, and noticing when they do little things to help me.

October - Think Veggies!

Theme: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)

Application: Think Veggies!

This year I was all excited to be the veggies queen. I planted a huge garden and spent tons of time working with my family in it. When this theme was announced, I loved it and was inspired. My kids were not all so thrilled. I have one son who has announced that if it is green he will not eat it. So, I decided we’d try some new vegetables as long as the garden held out. (And not all veggies are green.) We discovered that if you grill things on the BBQ, they seem more exotic and tastier. Green, red and orange pepper, eggplant, and zucchini, even corn on the cob. We had a “one bite” rule. .. they had to try just one bite. Amazingly we discovered that we could even have a vegetarian meal and survive. Sometimes I even cut veggies and snuck them into sauces. Our home grown HEALTHY vegetables are becoming a bigger part of our family diet. And we are taking care of our bodies – as the temples they are.

September - Smile!

D&C 61:26  Be of good cheer for I AM in your midst

APPLICATION : SMILE.

There is so much to smile about. As a smile crosses your face we hope your spirits will brighten.

I'd like to take the liberty to change a Primary song.

If your happy and you know it --SMILE

If your happy and you know it --SMILE

If your happy and you know it, then your FACE will surely show it.

If your happy and you know it , SMILE.

It is such an easy thing to do, yet gives big rewards. I remember a youth conference I attended years age. A young girl got up to bear her Testimony and said , one of the other well known girls in the stake had looked right at her and SMILED AT HER. She said, IT MADE MY WHOLE DAY!. Little do we know the difference we can make in some one elses life.

Studies show a smile is contagious. Let's start an epidemic.

Be of good cheer, for I AM in you midst.

Temple Themes - 8 Months in Review

If you missed Relief Society today, we reviewed all of our monthly temple themes, and then rolled out our LAST theme.  Here is our Relief Society Presidency presentation, from September thru May:

Last Sept. we introduced our 9 month temple plan. Our purpose was to help and inspire us to move UP, to look introspectively into our lives and bring about change where change was needed. We’ve had some fun but we hope that something along the way has stirred you and you have experienced new joy and love. Today we are going to review all 8 themes and introduce the 9th and last monthly theme . In doing so we hope you will review in your own minds things you have done or experiences you have had that have brought you closer to the Savior and helped prepare you for that Day of Dedication that we will share together in the temple on June 9.

I Love to See the Temple

We've changed the words to this wonderful Primary song just a little in anticipation of our day in the Temple on June 9th.  We sang this in Relief Society today, and we'll sing it again on Saturday at our Spring Sing.  Hope to see you there.

I LOVE TO SEE THE TEMPLE

I Love to see the temple
I'm going there in June
To feel the Holy Spirit,
To pray and be in tune

For the temple is a house of God
A place of love and beauty
I'll prepare myself while I am here
This is my sacred duty.

I love to see the temple
I'll go inside June 9th
I'll covenant with our Father
I'll feel his holy light

For the temple is a holy place
A place of love and beauty
I'll prepare myself while I am here
This is my sacred duty.
