Start Boxing It UP!

Even though the weather can't quite decide if it is done with winter or ready for spring, we are getting ready for summer.
As you begin your SPRING CLEANING, remember the next SWAP is JUNE 19th.
This one is going to be bigger and better than ever. We're inviting the whole neighborhood! So, box up your winter clothes, anything you haven't worn in a year, and we can share it with others. Watch for more details as the date gets closer.

Thank You!

I am THANKFUL for primary children! I am thankful that they are willing to come share their beautiful voices with us every month.

I am grateful for Sis. Skolmoski's willingness to accompany musical numbers all over the ward - making our temple theme come alive.

THANK YOU!!

Quilt for Nick Massie

Feast your eyes on this beautiful quilt pieced together by our own Lisa Chin for Nick Massie who was wounded serving our country in Afghanistan. On each of the light-colored squares and strips are inspirational quotes hand written by members of the Grandview 1st Relief Society. This quilt was made with love to be donated to the VA Hospital for Nick. Our prayers continue to be with Nick and his family, as well as all of the service men and women serving our country.

They're at it again!

Aren't we going to be sad when our "commercial interruptions" come to an end?

This month, our priesthood reminded us how much "My Heavenly Father Loves Me."

Whenever I hear the song of a bird
Or look at the blue, blue sky,
Whenever I feel the rain on my face
Or the wind as it rushes by,
Whenever I touch a velvet rose,
Or walk by our lilac tree,
I'm THANKFUL I live in this beautiful world
Heavenly Father created for me.

A day at the bakery in Welfare Square.........

Welfare assignments are just plain fun! You get to dress in good looking head gear, aprons, and delicate gloves. You indulge in plenty of chit chat with friends and neighbors. You learn how skilled (or unskilled) you are. You nibble on bread here and there. And at the end of the day you stand back and say "Wow! Today I have helped put food on the tables of the hungry!" This is an amazing church that does amazing things, and we are a part of it!

THANK YOU!

Hooray for Spring!

This weekend we had the chance to finally get outside and get our hands dirty. As we worked in our yard as a family I was surrounded by the wonders of springtime.

I think of tulip bulbs - little sleeping balls waiting to explode into stalks of red, purple, peach and white. Daffodils - creamy shades of whites and yellows greeting each spring morning. How wondrous that these markers of spring can brave the last snowfalls to greet us and remind us that the delights of warmer weather are fast approaching.

Every time I see a tulip or a daffodil I am thankful for this reminder. I love tulips and daffodils all the more because their season is fleeting and must be savored for only a few weeks. I thank our Heavenly Father for creating such glorious reminders of his love for us.

What are you thankful for this month?

What a treat to have the Young Women sing to us about the temple last Sunday. We want to tell them how much we LOVE them and a giant THANK YOU for sharing their testimonies of the temple through song.

TEMPLE PLAN MONTHLY THEME - APRIL 2010

THEME: “. . . if ye should render all the thanks . . . which your whole
soul has power to possess . . . yet ye would be unprofitable
servants. (Mosiah 2:20-21)

APPLICATION: THANK YOU

Believe it or not, we are now at Month number EIGHT of our NINE month preparation to dedicate a full day of our lives, to worship the Lord in the Temple. Have you had fun. Have you altered anything in your life that helps to prepare your heart to be taught by the Spirit?

Each year as we pass through the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas, our hearts are more inclined to adopt what President Monson has taught us, namely an Attitude of Gratitude. Then with the coming of the new year, our lives become embroiled in the challenges of life and our grateful attitudes sometimes are diminished. We even now live in a time in which our younger generation are referred to as the ME GENERATION, in which their approach seems to be “What’s in it for Me?”

Elder Robert D. Hales taught us in the May 1992 Ensign:

Gratitude is a state of appreciation, an act of thanksgiving
which causes us to be humble, because we recognize acts
of kindness, service or caring from someone else, which
lifts us and strengthens us.

President Joseph F. Smith taught us that one of the greatest sins of which the inhabitants of the world are guilty today, is the sin of INGRATITUDE. Studies show that children today, hear many more negative than positive expressions from their parents, resulting in low self-esteem, and poor performance.

President Monson counseled us that: We can lift ourselves and others as well [if we will] cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude.

As we live in this spiritually downward spiraling world, it seems that many of the thoughtful common courtesies are fast disappearing. The word THANK YOU is often omitted from our daily relationships.

During this Month of Preparation may we truly cultivate and activate the expression of gratitude (namely THANK YOU) among us.
May we daily find little acts of kindness, service or caring, done for us by our spouse, our family, our friends and neighbors, and sincerely say: THANK YOU

This process will not only lift and strengthen others and ourselves, it will improve and purify our hearts.

Wheat Sale

Tomorrow (Saturday, April 3) is the truckload wheat sale at the Bosch Kitchen Center stores. If you are in the market for wheat or any breadmaking supplies (honey, yeast. lecithin, gluten flour, dough enhancer, etc.), this is the best time to buy. If you miss this sale, there will be another on conference Saturday in October.

I love the wheat from the Bosch stores. A truckload of the bread quality wheat (white or traditional red) is brought in for that sale. You can also get soft white wheat (best for non-yeast recipies like pancakes, muffins, etc. as well as sprouting). In addition, they will have their mills and mixers on sale. If you want to make bread quickly, an electric mill is the one to buy. If you really don't use your wheat but want one for emergency use, a hand grinder is fine. Both will be on sale, as well as the Bosch mixers and a lot of other kitchen equipment. They will have food storage buckets, black and pinto beans, butane stoves, coconut and canola oil, powdered milk, powdered eggs, Mexican vanilla, oat groats and flaker mills (to make your own fresh oatmeal), molasses, 6-grain rolled cereal, baking powder, Real Salt, spelt, water storage containers, Xagave (a liquid sugar substitute), etc. on sale.

This time the wheat is only $13.99 for 50 pounds--$12.99 for 12 bags if you go between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Saturday. (That is a savings of $5.00) This price is substantially less than it was a year ago at this time. If you want the low price but don't want 12 bags, you can go in together with another family or two.

The address is 6161 South Highland Drive (that little strip mall on the east side of the street just south of where Van Winkle meets Highland Drive. There is another store in Sandy on 90th South and 7th East.

Just thought there might be someone in the ward interested in wheat!

Pick Your Own

Now that Spring is here and we are thinking about fresh produce, do you know of a local farm where fresh produce can be purchased or picked?  Please leave a comment and we will compile them for everyone to enjoy.

In the meanwhile here are a couple of possibilities I have found and love that you might want to check out this year:

Day Farms, 2500 W. Gentile St., Layton, UT, 801-546-4316
U-Pick Asparagus in April thru May (when I called earlier this week they said to check back the first week in April to see if it has come up yet.)
U-Pick Strawberries for two weeks in June and two weeks in August (my younger girls and I went up at the end of June, the end of the crop for that season, and picked the most flavorful berries to eat and make jam)
From Mid-August through September they have U Pick Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Chili & Sweet Peppers, Green Beans, Eggplant, and Tomatillos.  They also have other fruits and vegetables available for purchase through out the summer.

Click Here to go to the Utah's Own website which will show you all the Farmers Markets throughout the state.  I personally love the Murray Farmers Market once it starts in August because it has easy parking and fabulous fruit without the art market.
