Strong & Immovable Challenge
Did you attend/watch/listen to the General Relief Society meeting this past Saturday?
If you missed it or would just like to watch it again, here it is:
Or click here to be taken to the Church's web page to watch it again.
The Wilford Stake Relief Society has asked that we listen to the messages with a purpose. There are almost 100 days left in the year, and the Stake has challenged each of us to work on the "essential thing" that will help us become a woman that is "Strong and Immovable."
"Our personal conversion comes as we begin to live the way the Lord wants us to live - steadfast and immovable in keeping all of the commandments, not just those that are convenient. This then becomes a process of refinement as we strive to make each day a little better than the last." (Cheryl C. Lant, Primary General President, Righteous Traditions, Ensign, May 2008, 14)
The Stake Relief Society had "100-day Strong and Immovable" challenge cards available for each of the sisters. They ask that we each fill out two cards - one to leave with the ward presidency as a symbol of our commitment to the challenge, and the other to take home as a reminder of our commitment. Please contact a member of our ward's Relief Society presidency if you have not received a set of these challenge cards yet.

Back to School
Hitting the books isn't just for kids.
King Solomon said: "With all thy getting get understanding." (Prov. 4:7)
President Gordon B. Hinckley stated: "There can be no doubt, none whatever, that education pays."
We are fortunate to live near so many esteemed places of higher learning and most universities and colleges having continuing education programs.
Brigham Young University offers on-line Independent Study at www.byu.edu. You can take personal enrichment courses on subjects ranging from family history to gardening. Several of their on-line courses are free. (1-800-9148931)
The University of Utah (www.utah.edu) has continuing education classes at their main campus and other satellite campuses. Their fall schedule includes classes you can take once a week like "Be a Bike Commuter" and "Balanced Eating for Weight Loss." (801-581-6461)
Salt Lake Community College (www.slcc.edu) is great for anyone investigating a career change.
Salt Lake School District (www.slc.k12.ut.us) has an affordable community education program for both children and adults. Their fall catalogue is now offering classes at Highland High School in art, languages, photography, computers, belly dancing and cake decorating. (801-481-4891)
Granite School District's Granite Peaks program (http://www.granitepeaks.org/) also offers affordable community education programs for both children and adults. Many of the classes are offered at Olympus High School as well as other schools in the Granite district.
lds.org will guide you to the many local institute classes that are available.
Another learning resource that was mentioned last night was The Power of Moms at http://powerofmoms.com/ This website offers many wonderful ideas on how to "grow ourselves, build each other, shaping the future." Tennille mentioned the idea of a Learning Circle. A Learning Circle is part girls night out, part bookclub, part support group, part motherhood course. Click on the Link to see all the details.

Laundry Soap
Here is the recipe Susan C. was telling us about in Relief Society on Sunday.
Laundry Recipe at 2 cents a load!
Ingredients
1 bar Ivory or favorite bar soap grated*
1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda (not Baking Soda)**
4 cups water
Dissolve grated bar soap into 4 cups of boiling water in a sauce pan on medium heat. Keep windows open; the smell is very strong. Remove pan from stove, add the borax and washing soda; stir till dissolved. Pour pan into a 5 gallon bucket and then add hot water till it reaches the 3 1/2 gallon line. Let mixture sit over night or 24 hours and stir very well each time before using. It will not be a normal liquid; it will thicken as it cools. It will be thick like clam chowder soup. I use about 3/4 cup of this per load, or 1 cup if washing socks.
NOTES:
The borax and washing soda can be found in the laundry aisle. The cost of the bucket is $5 at Smiths, plus it has a nice handle and measuring lines. You will also need a long spoon to stir the bucket. If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with ½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice. Orange essential oil is very nice. I made a spead sheet with all the details. Happy Washing!
* Ivory soap is the cheapest and Dove is the best for sensitive skin. Another option is 1/2 bar Fels Naptha soap but some people have said that it irritates their lungs and has a possible link to cancer.
**Washing soda is sodium carbonate, and is made by Arm and Hammer. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and is not as strong as sodium carbonate.
