Wasn't it the Reverand Mother who told Maria that when one door closes, another one opens? As we close the door on 2009 we review the past and look forward to the future. 2010 we hope will be a year of promise, a year of wonder and a year of good fortune. We can sit and wait for it to happen, or we can go to work and make it happen. There will always be those things that happen that are beyond our control, but there is much that can happen that is in our control.

Last Sunday evening, Richard and I spoke at a fireside at the Utah State Prison. It was a sobering experience. A group of about 60 women inmates came with eagerness to spend two hours together sharing music and thoughts. As I sat and looked into their eyes, I was overcome with their beauty. Their hair was styled, their make-up was enhancing. In short, they were beautiful and mostly young women. Had they not been in issue inmate attire, they might well have been sitting in our Relief Society Room, singing, listening, sharing and loving.

I don't know why any of them were there or how long they going to be there, but I was touched with the knowledge that they are daughters of God who somewhere along the way, made some choices that have put them behind bars. A door has been slammed on them, and yet there was much hope for a bright future. They told of the work they are doing in the Family History Library that is located at the Prison. They showed us pictures of the many things they had made and donated to the less fortunate. It struck me that there is never a time nor is there a reason why we cannot be doing good.

I thought of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Remember when she was told she had concieved a child and she said, it was not possible! The angel answered her by saying, "With God, nothing is impossible!" I looked at them that night and felt certain that if they make God their partner, nothing is impossible!:

So it is with us......Making God our partner in 2010 will bring us blessings. And we can conquer the obstacles that will loom in front of us. And every time a door closes, we will find another one that opens.

I, with you, look forward to 2010.
