Until We Meet Again. . .

We have recently lost two of our Grandview neighbors on Claybourne St..  We hope those of you who know these families will give them your sincere condolences.

1939 ~ 2012
Peter Wolfgang Koerbler lost his courageous battle of seven years to difficult health conditions on May 7, 2012. He was born to Anton Franz and Stephanie Marie Negrini Koerbler on November 7, 1939, in Vienna, Austria. He lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for nearly 60 years. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Boulware, on September 1, 1967. Peter fought valiantly to live, never complaining of all he endured. He had a quick wit and loved to tell stories, joke, tease, and make everyone laugh. He was beloved by all who had the honor of knowing him. Peter will be missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Carolyn; children, Michael (Emily), and Jennifer Flynn; grandchildren, Kieran, Joshua, and Zander; and sister, Ruth (Charles) Greenmun. Preceded in death by parents and son, Jason. An open house to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at 8054 Big Spring Drive, West Jordan. www.goffmortuary.com

Richard E. Hadfield

Richard E. "Dick" Hadfield, beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend died peacefully at home on May 8, 2012. He was born on Nov. 17, 1937, the only child of William E. "Ted" Hadfield and Lola Ernstsen Hadfield. Dick was a lifelong resident of Salt Lake City and was employed by Hercules/ATK for 39 years. On July 16, 1966 he married Barbara Turnier.
Dick was a Master Gardener and after retiring pursued his love of gardening by raising thousands of plants, sharing them with family and friends.
Dick is survived by his wife Barbara, son Brian (Danyell), daughter Keri and grandchildren Sheridan and Liam.
At his request there will be no funeral. There will be an informal memorial gathering to celebrate Dick's life on Tuesday, May 15 fron 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sugarhouse Garden Center, 1602 E. 2100 So. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Sugarhouse Park in Richard's name.

Carol Bernice Warner, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed away May 3rd at age 76.
Carol's life was full of love and devotion to her husband and family and always put her family before her own needs. She married the love of her life, ElVon in 1958. She was a loving mother of her two children, Shauna Shedden, and Sherm (Margarita) Warner; grandmother of three granddaughters, Tiana, Cecilia (Daryl), and Tanisha; and one grandson, Jamie. She graciously followed her husband around the world by accompanying him on two overseas assignments to Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. She also obtained her B.S. degree from BYU in business education and worked in many different positions including being a word processing supervisor at Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company and teaching typing and word processing at University of Northern Iowa. She finished her career working at ElVon's side with S.E. Warner Software. She was truly loved by everyone who knew her.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the LDS Parkway 9th ward chapel located at 10200 S. 3200 W., South Jordan, Utah 84095 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am and will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow the service at the Provo cemetery. Services under the care of Holbrook Mortuary. Condolences may be extended to the family at: sewarner@sewarner.com

Sunday's Lesson

   Ann Hatch gave the lesson Sunday on VISITING TEACHING.  She taught us that visiting teaching is not just a quick visit and lesson---  but it is ministering to, watching over, and strengthening our sisters  She showed a short video clip of Sister Julie B. Beck.  When Sister Beck was asked what is the one thing she would tell us about visiting teaching she answered "Get over yourselves! Just take care of it---just take care of each other!  We can do this!"   Ann bore a strong personal testimony of being a visiting teacher.  She inspired us all to be better visiting teachers.

Spring Swing in Photos

Just a few photos from the great evening we had over the weekend at the Spring Swing.  

 The University of Utah Ballroom Dancers helped everyone learn a thing or two about swing dancing.

There were lots of delicious cupcakes and candies to snack on.

And the kids seemed to enjoy the dancing as much as the adults:

Spring Swing

Ice Box Cookies

1/2 lb butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1/2 lb chopped nut
3 eggs
5 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda

Cream butter, add sugars, nuts, eggs and flour.  Add salt, cinnamon and soda.  Form into 3 or 4 rolls and wrap in wax paper then chill in refrigerator overnight.  Slice and bake.  350 degrees about 5 to 8 minutes.

(Very stiff dough - best if made in bread mixer)

These are called "Ice Box Cookies" because they need to be chilled (I freeze the rolls of dough) before you can slice them.  My grandmother had a big Ice box where a man would deliver ice each week - twice in the summer, and it would keep the entire "box" cold.  There were several compartments with heavy doors and sturdy handles that locked air tight when closed to keep the cold in.

Revnicha (Croation Nut Bread)

Recipe from Laurie P.
Yield: 4 loaves

Yeast Bread:
1 Tblsp yeast or 1 pkg active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup melted butter
2 eggs at room temperature
1 cup lukewarm mashed potatoes
6 1/2 to 7 cups whole wheat flour or all purpose flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl.  Stir in sugar, salt, butter, eggs, potatoes and 4 cups of the flour.  Beat until smooth.  Stir in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle.  (The dough will be soft.)  Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.  Place in a greased bowl; turn greased side up.  Cover tightly; refrigerate at least 8 hours.  (Dough can be kept up to 5 days in refrigerator at 45 degrees or below.)  Keep covered.

Filling:

(I like to make 4 individual bowls of filling rather than make one big bowl so each loaf has the same amount of filling.  The filling recipe is for ONE loaf of bread.  Make 4 bowls or 4x the recipe and ivied into fourths.)


Filling for ONE loaf:
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 egg
1/4 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp lemon extract

Mix walnuts, sugar, butter, egg, vanilla and lemon extract.

Punch down dough and divide into 4 equal pieces.

Roll 1 piece of dough into a rectangle, 15 x 10 inches, on a lightly floured surface.  Spread 1 bowl of filling over rectangle to within 1 inch of the edges.

Roll up gently, beginning at one of the long sides.  Moisten the ends with water; pinch edges of dough into roll to seal.  Bend roll in half and place in a greased or parchment paper lined 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.  Cover; let rise in a warm place until double, about 1 1/2 hours.

Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until bread is browned.  Remove from pan and place bread on a towel lined cooling rack.  Cover with a towel.  When cool, the bread may be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap. Refrigerate or freeze for best storage.

You can learn why and how to index on the website before you download the program to your computer.

Sister Charlotte gave us these helpful indexing hints:

1. For help with instructions in a field press Field Help.

2. If a Field is blank press Ctrl B.

3.If a Field is unreadable press X.

4. If a Field is the same go to the marked field, right click in that field and then click Ditto Fields below.

5. If you have a question about a city or county click the field, type what you think it says and then click the down button in that field and click Look Up.

6. If you find a letter you can't read, check other words in the document for that letter.

7. If you are unable to finish the batch exit the program and when you return click the batch that is written.

8. If a child is under the age of one enter 0.

High Priests Activity

It was take the High Priests and their wives to work day for Brother Evans Saturday night.

No, Brother Evans is not the mascot for the Utah Grizzlies.

He, along with several other dentists, share the responsibility of being on hand to fix up the teeth of the players if there are problems during a game, and lets be honest, this is hockey, inevitably there are problems!

Those who were able to attend were excited to enjoy a fun evening.

 There was time for visiting

and lots of cheering too

because there was 

a lot of action on the ice.

The Grizzlies won 4 to 3!
