Ruby was born a few years ago on October 28th in Salt Lake City, Utah, to parents who immigrated from Norway. Her father died when she was 12 years old. Ruby's mother had a chicken farm, from which she supported her family. Ruby and her three brothers learned the value of hard work while very young. Ruby lived with her family on Atkin avenue and 20th East from the age of six until she married her husband, Cal. They married in the Salt Lake Temple after Cal was released from the service. She and Cal built their home on Atkin Avenue and have lived there ever since. Cal passed away in January 2009.
Cal and Ruby have always had an orchard with fruit trees and a large garden. Ruby has done extensive canning from their garden. In addition she sewed most of her four children's clothes when they were young. In recent years she has done arts and crafts for her daughters to enter in shows.
Ruby remembers when the ward was built. She remembers the groundbreaking ceremony as well as President Grant's dedication of the building. Before that she and her family attended the East Millcreek Ward and then the Wilford Ward. President Hinckley was a counselor in the stake presidency in the East Millcreek Stake at the time this area was part of that stake.
Ruby has many fond memories of Relief Society. She made many quilts, aprons, pajamas and embroidered items for bazaars. In those early days the Relief Society had bazaars to raise money to pay their expenses; anything extra was donated to the ward budget. She and Bea served as Relief Society counselors. Ruby also served as a counselor and a secretary in the Primary. She remembers the carnivals hosted by the Primary each summer for the Primary fun raising effort. Ruby has many fond memories of serving in the church.
Ruby taught cooking classes in Relief Society for the ward and the stake. She taught many cooking skills - even candy making which requires a high level of expertise. She is an excellent cook and even worked in catering. Ruby has had a rich, full life filled with hard work, discipoine and much service to the church.
